Help!

May 24, 2010

I am making a quilt for a sweet friend of mine, & have settled on this stack of fabrics (mostly Good Folks. Now I am debating on a design, & it’s between this and this.

What’s your vote, and why?

I vote for the first one because it’s a nice twist on the traditional log cabin!

Amanda Elizabeth May 24, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I love the second one!

Amber May 24, 2010 at 8:52 pm

I love them both – sorry I can’t be more helpful! Either one will look amazing!

Andi May 24, 2010 at 8:59 pm

The circles for sure.
There’s so much colour and contrast in your (divine) fabric selection that the 2 tone effect of the log-cabin might get lost.

Alison May 24, 2010 at 9:13 pm

I LOVE circles. So choice 2.

amanda May 24, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Both are wonderful – and your solids are divine, btw – but I’d pick the circles because to me, Good Folks is all about the prints – which would get lost (I think) in the cabin.

Either way, I can’t wait to see what happens next!

I vote do circles for the reasons already stated. The contrast in the fabric needs to be showcased with a beautiful contemporary pattern and circles are just plain fun!

Sandi May 24, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Circles, definitely. I love the log cabin, but the variety of colors and the scale of the prints wouldn’t show as well in the smaller pieces of the log cabin. The circles would feature the fabric better.

ditto what everyone else said. i like the log cabin better overall , but i think the fabrics you have are better suited to the second pattern

Toni May 24, 2010 at 11:35 pm

I’d go with the circles. They fit well with the fabric and they are wonderfully fun.

Stine May 25, 2010 at 12:02 am

Circles for sure! I’ve been wanting to try a circle quilt too.

Molly May 25, 2010 at 4:45 am

I like the circles. I like them both but I just think the beautiful fabric would be showcased more with the bigger pieces of fabric.

Definitely the circles one. I was lucky enough to get to the Quilting Exhibition at the V&A in London at the weekend. There was a really beautiful circles quilt from the 1800s on show (and you could even see some of the piecing paper!).

I like the log cabin better, but because of the placement of the colors/different valued fabrics. I think it could work if you did warms/cools in opposite corners.

It depends on what your friend needs, and whether you’re making her the quilt in response to something going on in her life. The log cabin is good if she needs courage or energy, or if something wildly exciting or joyous is going on. The circles are good if what she needs is strength and tranquility. . .

I’d go circles. Firstly because circle quilts always look fab, secondly with the fabrics you’ve chosen there would be more interest with the circles and thirdly because, oh I’ve forgotten my thirdly but I love those circles!

Rosamaría May 25, 2010 at 6:17 am

circles! why? to see the all the beatufiul fabrics that you will use with a bigger area!

Claire May 25, 2010 at 7:08 am

I’d go with Option 2. Using the circles you’ll be able to see more of the great fabric patterns you chose. Also, I think if you went for the 1st option you’d have to have a very definate divide between light and dark coloured fabrics – wouldnt be able to use any of the medium toned fabrics.

Rebekah May 25, 2010 at 7:19 am

I vote for the giant log cabin. I think it would look really cool with the warm and cool colors separate. It doesn’t look like you’re using too many large scale patterns to make the circle quilt worth it.

ellesquare May 25, 2010 at 7:23 am

I vote for B. No contest!

Anna May 25, 2010 at 7:28 am

Circles – hands down winner. I think the circles are a fresher look.

Dawn W. May 25, 2010 at 7:54 am

I vote for the circles! So fresh and happy … just like the fabrics in your stack.

Nicole May 25, 2010 at 8:51 am

I love the circles, but either way your friend would be lucky.

elle May 25, 2010 at 8:53 am

based on the fabrics alone, I’d chose the second. The logs lend themselves to a lower contrast in the quarters while the circles need more contrasts.

val May 25, 2010 at 9:10 am

Definitely the 2nd! I can’t wait to see it!

Erin May 25, 2010 at 9:14 am

I vote the second one with the circles. So interesting to the eye. Would be a great design for a baby. And the fabrics would look good in bigger pieces I think.

Sarah May 25, 2010 at 9:24 am

I vote for the circles! I think it will show off the fabrics better. Also, I spotted a blue interlocking circle pattern in your fabric stack there. Go with it! ;)

Jerilyn May 25, 2010 at 9:56 am

Choice #2~ I love the contrast of the shapes, and I love circles!

Cheryl Arkison May 25, 2010 at 11:01 am

I’m partial to circles, so I am drawn to that one. It is also a better pattern for showcasing fabrics – if that is your goal.

Tacey B. May 25, 2010 at 2:22 pm

They are both great but, I also vote for the circles. I think it will show off the fabric more effectively.

Robyn / Coffee and Cotton May 25, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Definitely the Roundabout. It would be gorgeous!

Cristin May 25, 2010 at 8:33 pm

I vote for the circle layout :-) BECAUSE I’ve never tried it but really really want to!

sara May 25, 2010 at 10:58 pm

Love the first one, have bookmarked it to look at again later. :)

mary May 26, 2010 at 1:47 pm

I think the first – the log cabin variation. It suits your colors, would be fun to quilt and there is nothing like a log cabin to wrap around yourself in the winter.

Jessica C May 26, 2010 at 4:07 pm

I’d go with the circles, because 1) it would definitely showcase each fabric better (as others have said), 2) it’s more visually interesting to me, better movement, and 3) I love circles (and I did one of her circle quilts, so obviously I would pick it). = ) Good luck.

Alexis May 27, 2010 at 8:46 am

Log cabin! Good folks is great in strips- that design will look amazingly striking in your fabrics and what’s more folksy than a cabin?

Malin May 31, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Roundabout!
Circles are fantastic!

Robin Bartholomew June 2, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Circles! Much more interesting…

Liz June 3, 2010 at 9:34 pm

I vote for design wall because the circles caught my eye. I would walk into a room and immediately be drawn to the quilt. I think I know who this is for, and if so..they could use something a little loud. In the end, I know they would both be beautiful.

leslie June 5, 2010 at 4:08 pm

log cabin! log cabin! log cabin!

:)
